This book originated from an IET webinar, “Electromagnetic Waves: Successfully Surfing the Subject,” held in June 2020. The idea was for experts in various areas of electromagnetics to contribute chapters that summarize current developments in their specialties and logically project future technological trends—sometimes looking as far as a century ahead.
The resulting volume explores current and emerging trends in ten of the most dynamic and significant areas of electromagnetics. Topics include wireless power transfer, magnetic confinement fusion, the use of metamaterials to enhance antennas, lenses, and cloaking devices, high-power superconducting motors, magnetic levitation applications, electrostatic dissipation in healthcare, electromagnetic propulsion for spacecraft, advances in liquid crystal displays, cutting-edge particle accelerators, and the technological potential of magnetic monopoles.
The book draws inspiration from the Maxwell Equations, which show that accelerating or oscillating charges produce electromagnetic waves, and aims to similarly “make waves” in the field by forecasting future directions.
New Waves in Electromagnetic Technology is a valuable resource for researchers in electromagnetics who want insights into the forefront of scientific thought and a long-term perspective on where the field is headed.
